Meet Matthew

I'm Matthew Gottfredson. I keep the books and watch the numbers for small business owners, so they can get back to the work they're great at.

Bedrock Financial Operations is a Utah bookkeeping and fractional CFO firm run by an operator, not an accountant behind a desk. I've built four businesses of my own and sold one, and I spent a year underwriting acquisitions before starting Bedrock. Every month I reconcile your accounts and send financial statements you can actually read. When the decisions get bigger, I'm in the room as your CFO.

  • Monthly bookkeepingReconciled accounts, P&L and Balance Sheet, every month
  • Fractional CFOBudgets, forecasts, lending, and the big decisions
  • QuickBooks OnlineCertified ProAdvisor
  • Not a CPANo taxes, no payroll. Clean books your tax preparer will thank you for

Every great business is built on something that doesn't move.

Your numbers should be that thing. Not a shoebox of receipts, not a spreadsheet you dread, not a QuickBooks file nobody has reconciled since spring. A foundation: accurate, current, and understood.

That is what Bedrock does. Clean, reconciled books every month, statements written to be read, and a partner in the room when the decisions get bigger. The difference between a report that gets filed and a report that gets used.

Two ways to work together →
Who we work with

Built for businesses run by their owners.

Owner-run companies doing roughly $250K to $5M a year, from a solo operator to a crew of twenty-five, where the person reading the P&L is the same person who signs the checks.

01

Contractors and trades

Construction, painting, plumbing, HVAC, landscaping, cleaning, window washing.

Job costing, materials and subcontractor tracking, trucks and equipment, and the cash swings between big invoices. Matthew ran a six-person painting crew and a window-washing company, so this is home turf.

02

Service businesses

Salons, gyms, studios, agencies, consultants, coaches.

Recurring revenue, merchant fees, software subscriptions, contractors versus employees, and finally knowing what each service line actually earns.

03

Real estate and property

Investors, property managers, short-term rentals, small holding companies.

Property-by-property books, deposits and owner draws kept straight, lender-ready statements, and the underwriting eye Matthew brings from a year analyzing acquisitions.

Don't see your industry? If you own the business and want the numbers handled, we should still talk.

Why we do this

Get back to what you do best.

Nobody starts a business because they love bookkeeping. You started yours because you're great at something, and people need it. Our job is to take the numbers off your plate and hand them back as something useful, so your evenings, your weekends, and your best hours go to the work that's actually yours.

Start the conversation
How it works

Four steps to solid ground.

A predictable process, from the first call to a monthly rhythm you stop thinking about.

1

Talk

A short call about your business, your accounts, and what's been keeping you up at night. You'll leave with a clear price and a clear plan.

2

Set the foundation

We connect your accounts in QuickBooks Online, and if the books are behind, we clean them up first. No monthly service starts on a shaky base.

3

Monthly rhythm

Each month, every transaction is categorized and every account reconciled. You get a Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet with a short note, and an open invitation to walk through them together.

4

Build on it

Clean numbers make bigger decisions possible. When you're ready to plan growth, borrow, hire, or budget, Bedrock's CFO services pick up right where the books leave off.

Scope, stated plainly

What we do. What we don't.

Focus is the whole point. We do two things extremely well and hand the rest to people who specialize in it.

Bookkeeping

Categorization, reconciliation, monthly financial statements, cleanup and catch-up work, QuickBooks Online management.

Fractional CFO

Financial strategy, budgeting and forecasting, growth planning, lending and underwriting support, decision review.

Taxes · Payroll · CPA work

Bedrock is not a CPA firm and does not prepare taxes or run payroll. We keep your books so clean your tax preparer will thank you, and we're glad to coordinate with them.

Questions, answered

Before you call.

The things business owners usually ask on the first call. If yours isn't here, ask anyway.

Ask a question
Do you do taxes or payroll?

No. Bedrock is bookkeeping and fractional CFO work only, and we're not a CPA firm. What we do is keep your books accurate and reconciled every month, so when tax season comes, your preparer gets clean, ready-to-file records instead of a scramble. We're happy to coordinate with your CPA directly.

How is monthly bookkeeping priced?

By your monthly transaction volume, with a $350 minimum. A transaction is any line that moves through your accounts: a sale, a bill, a card swipe, a transfer. Use the price estimator on the bookkeeping page for a number in ten seconds, and we'll confirm it together on a short call. Pricing doesn't change without a conversation.

My books are behind or a mess. Where do we start?

With cleanup. Before any monthly service begins, we bring the past periods current: categorize what's uncoded, reconcile every account, fix miscategorizations, and hand you corrected statements for the period. Cleanup is billed at 75% of your monthly rate for each month cleaned up, with a $500 minimum, paid up front. Then the monthly rhythm starts on solid ground.

What do I actually get each month?

Reconciled bank and credit card accounts, every transaction categorized, and a Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet delivered with a short email. Every client gets full financial statements. That's not a premium feature. You'll also get a standing offer to walk through the numbers together, and a quick reply when you have a question mid-month.

What software do you use?

QuickBooks Online. Matthew is a certified QuickBooks ProAdvisor and works in it every day. If you're on something else, we'll talk through whether and how to move you over. Most clients find the transition simpler than they feared.

What is a fractional CFO, and do I need one?

A fractional CFO gives you the financial leadership of a full-time CFO for a fraction of the cost and time. It's for owners who are past "are the books right?" and into "what should we do next?" Budgeting, growth planning, lending, hiring, big purchases. If you're making decisions in the tens of thousands of dollars on gut feel, it's probably time. If you just need clean books, start there.

Do I have to be in Utah?

Bedrock is based in Utah, and everything we do runs through QuickBooks Online, email, and video calls. Distance isn't a barrier. Local clients are welcome to meet in person.

How do we get started?

Run the estimator or send a note through the contact page. We'll set up a short call, look at your accounts together, and confirm a price and a start date. Most new clients are up and running within a couple of weeks.

Books you can build on.

Monthly bookkeeping

What's included

Six things, every month, without fail.

Core bookkeeping, done properly. Nothing padded in, nothing quietly left out.

1
Organization

Your books get a structure before anything gets recorded: a clean chart of accounts, every bank and card connected, vendors and customers set up, and a QuickBooks Online file that makes sense to anyone who opens it.

2
Categorization

Every dollar in and out coded to the right account: income, expenses, transfers, owner draws, and adjustments. Consistently, so the reports mean the same thing month to month.

3
Reconciliation

Every bank and credit card account reconciled to the statement, every month. Along the way, the account activity is reviewed for accuracy, so miscodes, duplicates, and missing transactions get caught now instead of at year end.

4
Financial statements

A Profit & Loss and Balance Sheet delivered to your inbox each month, with a Statement of Cash Flows where it's useful, and a short note in plain English on what moved and why.

5
QuickBooks management

The platform stays healthy: bank feeds reconnected when they break, rules maintained, user access handled, and the file kept current so it's never the thing slowing you down.

6
Ongoing support

Quick answers mid-month, a standing offer to walk through your numbers together, and coordination with your CPA at tax time so nothing gets asked twice.

Pricing

Simple by design.

The monthly rhythm

Your numbers, explained by a person.

Every set of statements comes with a short note on what moved and why, and a standing offer to walk through it together. Fifteen minutes a month, and you know exactly where the business stands.

Cleanup and catch-up

Behind on the books? Start here.

If your records are incomplete, uncategorized, or simply months behind, we bring them current before monthly service starts. Past transactions get categorized, every account gets reconciled, errors get corrected, and you get accurate statements for the whole period, plus a summary of everything we changed.

Cleanup is billed at 75% of your monthly rate for each month cleaned up, with a $500 minimum, paid up front. Scope depends on the number of accounts, transaction volume, and the state of the records, and we'll tell you exactly what it is before we begin.

Is this the right fit?

Built for owners who want it handled.

Bedrock bookkeeping is a great fit if you

  • Run a small business and want the books done right, every month, without managing it
  • Use QuickBooks Online, or are ready to move to it
  • Want real financial statements, not just a categorized bank feed
  • Are behind, and want a clear path to current
  • May want a CFO-level partner as you grow

Probably not the right fit if you

  • Need tax preparation, tax filing, or payroll processing
  • Need an audit, review, or CPA attestation
  • Want to keep doing the books yourself with occasional check-ins
Next step

Let's look at your books.

A short call, a quick look at your accounts, and a confirmed price. No pressure, no pitch.

A CFO in your corner.

Fractional CFO

Bookkeeping tells you your numbers. A CFO shows you the strategy.

You know what to do next.

Every month ends with a decision, not just a report. What to push, what to cut, what to leave alone.

You can see cash ninety days out.

A rolling forecast that shows the tight weeks before they arrive, so payroll is never a surprise.

You hire when the numbers say yes.

Every new seat gets modeled before the offer goes out: what it costs, what it has to produce, and when it pays back.

You walk into the bank ready.

Lender-ready financials and a partner who speaks the bank's language, so a line, a loan, or a lease moves fast.

You price with a margin you can defend.

Job costing and gross margin by service line, so you stop guessing which work actually makes money.

Growth gets dates on it.

A budget the business runs on and a plan with numbers attached, reviewed together, adjusted as reality shows up.

How it works

Decisions, made together.

Not a report in your inbox. A seat at your table, a model open on the screen, and a partner who has already run the numbers on the thing you're about to do.

Where a CFO earns their keep.

An ongoing retainer, scoped to your business. These are the conversations we have with clients most.

StrategyFinancial strategy and decision support

A second set of eyes on every significant decision: hires, equipment, expansion, pricing, new lines of business.

PlanningBudgeting and planning guidance

A budget you'll actually use, and a rhythm for checking against it so surprises stop being surprises.

OperationsOperational financial review

Where the money goes, where it leaks, and what to tighten. Margins, overhead, and efficiency, examined honestly.

GrowthGrowth planning and goal alignment

Turning "we want to grow" into a plan with numbers attached, and a financial strategy that matches what you want the business to be.

CapitalUnderwriting and lending support

Lender-ready financials, packaging, and a partner who speaks the bank's language when you need a line, a loan, or a lease.

OngoingAdvisory support as needed

A standing seat at the table. Questions answered when they come up, not at the next quarterly meeting.

Pricing

Two ways in.

Most clients start with a Budget and Forecast Build. It's a fixed-scope project that shows you what CFO-level thinking does for your business before you commit to a retainer.

One-time project

Budget & Forecast Build

A complete operating budget and forward-looking forecast for your business, built from your real numbers with you in the room. Three working meetings over a 60-day period: the first to set goals and assumptions, the second to review the draft model together, the third to finalize and hand it off. You leave with a plan, a model, and a clear picture of the next twelve months.

Ongoing retainer

Fractional CFO

General Advisory on an ongoing basis. Scope and price are set by the needs of your company. Most engagements land between $2,000 and $3,500 per month.

From $1,500per month

CFO services are separate from bookkeeping and are not required to work with Bedrock. Clean, current books are a prerequisite, and if yours aren't there yet, we'll start with bookkeeping.

05
PHOTO 05 · CFO WORKING SESSIONClose on a planning session: Matthew's hand on a printed forecast, pen marks, a laptop with a model open. The owner's forearm in frame.
Who it's for

Owners with real decisions on the table.

You're doing well, and the decisions are getting bigger: a second location, a major hire, a piece of equipment that costs more than your first year's revenue, a loan application. You have the books. What you don't have is someone to think it through with, who has seen these decisions before and has no stake in the answer except getting it right.

That's what a fractional CFO is for. Matthew has run businesses, sold one, and analyzed acquisitions for an investment group. He brings that perspective to your table, at a fraction of what a full-time CFO costs.

Next step

Let's talk about what's next.

Tell us where the business is and where you want it to go. We'll tell you honestly whether a CFO engagement makes sense yet.

About Bedrock

Built by an
operator.

Bedrock Financial Operations is run by Matthew Gottfredson, a Utah business owner who has spent his whole working life on the owner's side of the ledger.

07
PHOTO 07 · PORTRAITThe main portrait. Matthew, three-quarter length, dark or textured backdrop, direct eye contact, relaxed and confident. This one goes everywhere.
The story

Bedrock is my fourth business. The first was a lawn-mowing route I started at twelve. The second was a residential painting company that grew to six employees. The third was a window-washing business I built from nothing and sold. Along the way I knocked doors, ran crews, made payroll, and learned what it feels like to make a big decision with numbers you weren't sure you could trust.

After a finance degree, I spent time as an acquisitions analyst for a real estate investment group, underwriting deals and building the models that decide whether a business is worth buying. That's where I learned to read a set of books the way an investor does: what's real, what's noise, and what a set of financials is actually saying about the business behind them.

Why bookkeeping

Because almost every small business owner I've met is flying without it. Not because they don't care, but because they're busy being great at the thing they started the business to do. Their books are behind, their reports are an afterthought, and every big decision is a little bit of a guess.

I started Bedrock to fix that. Clean, reconciled books every month, delivered with a note in plain English. And for the owners who want it, a partner in the room for the decisions that matter. The name is the whole philosophy: get the foundation right, and you can build anything on it.

How I work

I'm a certified QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor and I work in it every day. I keep the firm small on purpose. You work with me, not a rotating cast. I'm not a CPA, I don't do taxes or payroll, and I'm honest about that on the first call. I'd rather do two things exceptionally well than six things adequately.

If that sounds like the kind of partner you've been looking for, I'd love to talk.

The road here

Four businesses. One lesson.

Every one of them taught the same thing: the owners who know their numbers make better decisions, sleep better, and build faster.

Business 01Lawn care

Started at twelve with a mower and a route. First lesson in pricing, showing up, and getting paid.

Business 02Residential painting

Grew to a crew of six. First lesson in payroll, cash flow, and what a slow month really costs.

Business 03Window washing

Built from zero and sold. First lesson in what a buyer looks for, and why clean books change the price.

Business 04Bedrock

Bookkeeping and fractional CFO for owners who want the foundation right. The business the other three were training for.

What we stand on

Three things that don't move.

Accuracy first

Reconciled means reconciled. Every account, every month, to the statement. Close enough is not a category we use.

Plain English

Financials you can read without a translator. Every report comes with a note that says what matters and what to watch.

Owner's mindset

We've made payroll, chased receivables, and sweated a slow month. Your numbers get treated like they're ours, because we know what's riding on them.
